Information on working with carers, including assessments and personal budgets

Carers

The Care Act sets out a duty for the Local Authority to assess the eligible needs of a carer. In the Care Act, a carer over 18 is defined by " an adult who provides or intends to provide care for another adult (an "adult needing care").

Carers Assessment guidance provides a legal framework and procedural information for supporting  informal/unpaid carers in Adult Social Care.

When a person and ,or, their carer moves out of the borough, guidance on Continuity of care when moving out of Camden is available on Camden Care Choices.  The guidance includes information that needs to be shared to ensure that care continues uninterrupted.

Where carers require a short break otherwise known as replacement care, all options to provide this support must be considered using the resources at home or in the family and community. This is funded from the carers budget.

A short stay in a residential/nursing home or respite is funded from the cared for persons personal budget.

Carers may require a short break in order to:

  • attend their own health and welfare appointments
  • receive medical treatment
  • attend personal care appointments i.e. hairdresser
  • pursue recreational activities i.e. meeting friends for an evening out
  • have a weekend break or enjoy a longer holiday
  • replacement care overnight may be needed so that the carer can catch up on their own sleep

Further information can be found in the Short Breaks guidance.
