Paying for care

Financial assessment and contributing towards cost of care

Paying for care

The Care Act states that the local authority may make a charge for meeting a person's care and support needs. Following a needs assessment if a person has eligible care and support needs they may need to have a financial assessment. A financial assessment determines how much the person will contribute towards the costs of their care.

Individuals who pay the full costs of their care are known as 'self-funders'. An individual may become a self funder because he/she:

  • has income and assets that are above the financial threshold for financial support from the Council
  • chooses to be not financially assessed and may want to make own arrangements for support
  • is not eligible for care and support services but want to have services in place
  • has not approached the council but chooses to make own arranged for support

Camden Care Choices website provides information on local support services that are available in Camden.

ASC will still carry out a needs assessment even if the individual is not eligible for financial support. ASC can also support with arranging services for self-funders if he/she is unable to and there is no one available to support.

Please advise individuals to get independent financial advice if they are a self-funder in order to make informed decisions. Further information is available on the Camden Care Choices website.
