Direct work

Direct work

It is a key principle of Camden’s Model of Social Work that social workers are able to build strong working relationships with children and families, and that direct work is a key mechanism for this.

Direct work is an essential aspect of the social work task necessary for implementing children's plans and helping them explore feelings and make sense of experiences in a safe environment.

Camden’s Direct work with children practice guidance provides social workers with information and practical advice on working with children and young people in a way that keeps their needs in focus, supports their rights and allows them to participate fully in the decision-making process whilst balancing this against the need to safeguard their welfare.

When working directly with children, social workers may be at risk of children misinterpreting words and actions leading to allegations. Social workers need to be aware of safe working practices in order to avoid this. Guidance can be found in the Safer working practice for adults working with children.

Where social workers are transporting children by car they should follow the advice on on the law regarding car seats for children.
