Vulnerable children

Some children are more vulnerable to harm, abuse, exploitation or poor outcomes because of their circumstances or because of their personal attributes.

Young carers are those children under the age of 18 who provide support, care and assistance for parents or other family members, including direct care and taking on responsibility for household tasks or caring for younger siblings.

Their caring responsibilities may mean that they miss out on taking up educational opportunities or socialising with their peers, leading to poorer outcomes in later life.

Social workers may identify young carers in the course of working with a family but many will be identified by Adult Social Care workers working with the adult.

Whenever a child is identified as a young carer, it is essential that CSFH and Adult Social Care work together as set out in the Young Carer’s protocol to assess and meet the child’s needs and those of the parent.

Camden has commissioned services for young carers from the Children's Society. For information see their leaflet.
