Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)

Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)

UASC are children under the age of 18 who are seeking asylum in the UK on their own behalf because they have been separated from their parents and/or they are not being cared for by any adult who by law or custom has responsibility to do so.

Because of the circumstances and experiences, UASC are likely to have additional health needs and will have a varying level of literacy and proficiency in English, and it is important that social workers and personal advisors are able to support them to access resources to address these needs.

As a looked after child, all UASC will be subject to care planning regulations and will have a health assessment and Personal Education Plan.

The CAMHS LAC Refugee Team is a specialist service for UASC focussing on their emotional wellbeing and social workers can refer UASC to the team for a service.

The refugee health map sets out the specialist health services available to UASC.
