Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)

Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)

UASC are children under the age of 18 who are seeking asylum in the UK on their own behalf because they have been separated from their parents and/or they are not being cared for by any adult who by law or custom has responsibility to do so.

For details of working with UASC please refer to the Unaccompanied migrant children and victims of trafficking and modern slavery policy.  and the UASC procedures.

As UASC will be looked after, social workers must follow Looked after children processes .

UASC may present in Camden but are most likely to be transferred to Camden from the central point of intake in Croydon. The National Transfer protocol sets out the procedures for transferring children between local authorities in a safe manner in order to ensure an even distribution of UASC across local authorities so that all UASC can access the services and support they need. This protocol also covers cases where Camden transfers a UASC case to another local authority.

Social workers also should follow the procedures for new UASC cases whenever a young person is referred to Camden.

It is essential that social workers follow the Recording UASC status on MOSAIC guidance as this information is used by Camden to claim funding from the Home Office for UASC.
