Living a Good Life Opportunities Group
The Living a Good Life Opportunities Group is made up of people from teams such as CLDS and CYPDS and is designed to help people with learning disabilities achieve their aims and ambitions. In particular, the group can support people going through a transition in their life, such as moving into adulthood or a change in their personal circumstances.
The group does not support with areas such as setting up care packages, but instead can help with things such as connecting someone to activities they would like to try, take part in a new hobby, or help to move into employment. The group come together and help to advise the person on potential next steps and options.
How to prepare for the Living a Good Life Opportunities Group meeting
If the person with LD would like support from the Living a Good Life Opportunities Group, the next step would be for the practitioner working with them to contact Louise Roberts, who will then send a ‘Who am I’ form to be completed. The form is designed to give the group an insight into who the person is, what makes them excited or nervous about the future, and goals or aspirations they have. This is then looked at during the meeting, to help the group advise. This can be completed by the person, with the help of a practitioner, family member or friend.
Once the form is completed and sent back, a meeting is then set up. The person with LD can attend this to represent themselves, or if they prefer, their practitioner, family member or friend can do this on their behalf. If the person has a wiki, this may also be used in the meeting.
Next steps
After the meeting, if the person with LD did not attend, the person representing them will update them on the recommendations and opportunities proposed by the group. This may be a helpful time to have another conversation about if they would like to take any of these forward and then help to arrange any further support to do so if necessary.
Further support
Additional support for people with LD is available through the day service and The Club, which run from The Greenwood Centre. The day service runs from 9.30am – 3.30pm. The Club runs at the Greenwood Centre from 10am – 6pm. Examples of activities that take place at the day service and The Club include drumming circles, dancing, IT group and bowling. People wanting to attend The Club must first present at the Living a Good Life Opportunities Group.
If you have questions about the day services or The Club, you can contact Brendan Leahy (Greenwood Day Service Assistant Manager) or Leon Honeysett (Greenwood Day Service Manager).
