What Matters
“My life has just changed. So I used to be really in control of my life. I was doing things like I was running. I was very much the lead of my family and the carer. Now I’ve become the one that’s cared for.”
Michaela was used to living an independent life, surrounded by family. When she was diagnosed with hyperacusis and other conditions, Michaela became much more isolated.
Michaela decided she wanted a family group conference after medical changes affected the way she was living her life.
Michaela wanted to make a positive change to help her improve her life, and recognised that family and friends were an important element of moving forward. She made contact with the Family Group Conferencing team at Camden Council who were able to use their unique service to support her.
What are Family Group Conferences?
Family Group Conferences provide an impartial, independent service where families or networks can speak to professionals about the concerns that we may have about something that is happening or changing in the life of a supported adult. Family Group Conferences are conducted in a neutral venue, away from the family home or a council building.
Whilst it’s called a “Family Group Conference”, it doesn’t have to include family if the adult wants to include people from their network instead. The group selected come together in the best interests of the adult, and meet in the venue selected. The process is entirely voluntary, and is aimed at addressing concerns that there may be about the adult supported.
Michaela’s group conference was held at a hotel near to where she lives. When she arrived, she found the room had been set up to accommodate her needs.
Michaela says: “The Family Group Conference is split up into three different parts. The first stage, everyone is there together. All the professionals talked, and were able to introduce themselves. The second part of it was family only, and professionals left so we were in the room on our own”
Next the professionals rejoin the family and the whole group talk about the plan the family have developed. Professionals can signpost to resources that may be available to support the plan the family has developed.
The Family Group Conference had a positive impact on Michaela’s life. Bringing together the professionals, and her family and friends ensured that everyone had the opportunity to voice their concerns.
Michaela says: “Since the conference, so much has happened. I’ve already had people in measuring my bathroom, planning my bathroom so I know it’s going to happen. I’ve got my wheelchair now since the conference, and that’s been a big help because I can go out. Just the other day, I was able to go out and buy a gift for my friend and go to the shop for the first time.
Sean Ahern, Family Conference Team Manager at Camden Council, has had great success running Adult Family Conferences. He believes that the conferences can have a positive impact on adult social care within the council.
“ There is information about Family Group Conferences available on the intranet and on the website. Anyone outside of Adult Social Care can complete a digital form that I can provide to refer people to the service”, he says
