What Matters
Shared Lives
Shared Lives schemes support adults with learning disabilities, mental health challanges, or other needs that make it harder for them to live on their own.
The schemes match someone who needs care with an approved carer. The carer shares their family and community life, and gives care and support to the person with care needs. More information on Shared Lives Camden can be found here.
Below the Shared Lives Camden team share an example of how they support people in the community.
Shared Lives has recently placed a lady who had lost both of her parents. The lady’s late mother had placed a request in her will to have her daughter placed in a 'culturally appropriate service' after her death. The family were practicing Hindu and their first language is Hindi, they had provided all support for their daughter and dedicated their lives to making sure she was fulfilled and well cared for.
We were able to place her with a family who are fluent Hindi speakers and Hindu practicing. The lady regularly attends temple and enjoys in all Hindu celebrations in her new home. Added to this she now has made her own friends, she also attends a day centre where she is enjoying a computer course. We are exceptionally proud of our carer who has included her in the centre of her family, we are also proud of the lady too, for settling so well under such sad circumstances.
The recent success of the Shared Lives Camden team meant that they were also recently selected to a reception at 10 Downing street, representing Shared Lives nationally.
