LGBTQ+ awareness

Camden has a zero-tolerance approach to abuse including hateful or inappropriate behaviour towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. Information is available that can help raise awareness and understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, different types of discrimination and how we can support LGBTQ+ people.

Statistics show that LGBTQ+ people and communities:

  • Have a 2.5 times higher rate of mental illness or experiences with substance abuse than the heterosexual population.
  • Gay, bisexual and trans men are more likely to attempt suicide, experience major depression and panic disorder than heterosexual people.
  • Lesbian and bisexual people are more than 3 times as likely to experience anxiety disorder.

The information below provides some examples of discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ people and communities:

  • 18% of staff had been the target of negative comments or conduct from work colleagues because they are a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • 18% of LGBT people who were looking for work said they were discriminated against because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity while trying to get a job.
  • 35% of LGBTQ+ staff have hidden or disguised that they are LGBTQ+ at work in the last year because they were afraid of discrimination.
  • 12% of lesbian, gay, and bi people wouldn’t feel confident reporting any homophobic or biphobic bullying to their employer.
  • 30% of LGBTQ+ people avoided areas and streets because they didn’t feel safe
  • 17% stated they have been discriminated against when visiting a café, bar or nightclub.
  • 25% trans people – stated they’d been the direct target of homophobic, biphobic, or transphobic abuse online.
