Collecting ‘LGBTQ data’ on sexual orientation and gender identity

If you aren't counted, you don't count

Collecting ‘LGBTQ data’ on sexual orientation and gender identity

LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer or Questioning

Why are we capturing this data?

We want to understand the people we support

This will enable us to take targeted action if we understand the proportion of LGBTQ people that we support. Identifying specific problems and barriers faced by LGBTQ individuals mean we are better placed to support them

We'll improve the way we work

Using LGBTQ data supports ASC to develop a genuinely inclusive approach to care and support based on evidence rather than assumptions. Having a clear sight of the different characteristics of the people we support means we are much more likely to succeed in this aim

We will enhance our credibility

Publishing data to show demonstrate we understand and have improved the social care support for LGBTQ people enhances the reputation of Adult Social Care. It could also encourage LGBTQ people who may otherwise not have contacted us to seek social care support

It sends a signal to the LGBTQ community

Collecting LGBTQ data lets people know their experiences are taken seriously and can positively impact our ability to deliver meaningful strengths based care and support to LGBTQ individuals

What Matters is about focussing on people’s strengths

Being part of the LGBTQ community is also a positive that can be drawn on in their support. Organisations such as Opening Doors London can link people to activities, events, information and support services specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, non-binary or gender fluid (LGBTQ+) people over 50
