Communication and digital accessibility

Communicating well

There are various reasons why someone may need communication support, this may include: 

  • English is not their first language 

  • Digital exclusion 

  • Those who are deaf, blind, or hard of hearing  

  • Speech impairments  

  • Mobility limitations  

  • Sensory needs  

  • Learning disabilities 

  • Environmental or social barriers  

There are simple ways we can all provide communication support, including: 

  • Speaking clearly and at a moderate pace. 

  • Using simple and direct language. 

  • Avoiding jargon or complex vocabulary. 

  • Being patient and allow extra time for the person to respond. 

  • Minimize background noise and distractions. 

  • Ask the person how they prefer to communicate and adapt where we can.
