Everything you need to know about issuing decorating allowances.

Decorating allowances

We have an agreement with B&Q who supply redecorating items to tenants to buy decorating items through a gift voucher requested on their portal.  The current agreement started Jan 2024 is for 5 years with two optional extensions of one year each.    Allowances are generally given to new tenants (if their home hasn't been redecorated when void) or tenants who might have had decorations damaged by repair work carried out in their homes.  The latter are issued by repairs and improvements.

This gives more detail about the paying process than is outlined below and details about the management of the same scheme by colleagues in repairs and improvements.

Swipecards

  • Alternatively tenants entitled to an allowance can be given a swipecard.  The card is supplied to Camden with no value on it but officers, who have access to the B&Q webportal, can load the card with a value.
  • The rear of the card and the small leaflet they are enclosed in (if supplied) advises tenants what they can buy. Tenants can use the cards to buy interior paints, wood care and varnishes, wallpaper and pastes, non powered decorating utensils, sandpaper, fillers and sealant.
  • Tenants can visit a store as often as they like.  Each purchase is knocked off the activated amount on the card with the remaining balance shown on their till receipt.
  • No change can be given for amounts not used.  However, if a card is lost or stolen, the tenant can be issued with a new card after cancelling the previous on the webportal (deducting what has already been spent).
  • Any card issued will expire after five years and will not be accepted by B&Q after that date.
