Tenant requests
Can I have a lodger?
Secure tenants can take in lodgers, as long as it doesn't cause overcrowding.
Tenants don't need permission, but it is better if we know so that we can give advice about the pros and cons.
Taking in a lodger may affect tenants on benefits, depending on the income. Some income is tax free. To find out more about this see Gov.uk website
Introductory tenants do not have this right, but we will consider requests from disabled tenants and carers.
Taking in a lodger is different from sub-letting. A sub-tenant is given sole use of a room or part of the property, and normally lives separately from the household, under a more formal arrangement. We can refuse a request to have a sub-tenant, although we will only do so if we have a good reason.
