Joint tenancies

"When a new tenancy begins we will normally offer joint tenancies to all married couples, couples with a registered civil partnership and couples who live together"  Camden Council Tenancy Conditions.

A request for a joint tenancy between spouses, civil partners or partners would not usually be agreed if;

  • there is a current Notice of Seeking Possession, Notice of Possession Proceedings for an Introductory Tenancy, Notice of Extension of an Introductory Tenancy, Notice of Demotion or Notice to Quit;
  • we are considering serving a Notice.
  • there are management problems such as nuisance or anti-social behaviour;
  • there are rent arrears and no payment plan; or
  • the immigration status of the proposed joint tenant prohibits them from being offered a secure tenancy.

If a joint tenancy is refused for one of these reasons, a letter or email explaining why can be helpful even if you have spoken to the tenant.
