Safeguarding adults at risk

Responding to a disclosure

If someone tells you something directly, you can:

  • Reassure the person that they have done the right thing in telling us and we make sure they know that abuse is never their fault.

  • Let them know we will never discuss their concerns with the person causing harm.

  • Do not promise confidentiality, explaining that we may have to share information with others to help keep them safe.

  • Proactively provide information and resources to help them keep safe and where we can, let them know what will happen next.

Its key to remember to:

  • Never discuss the concern with the person alleged to have caused harm or with anyone else present.

  • Discuss concerns in a safe and confidential location, ensuring that you cannot be overheard.

  • Always use a professional interpreter where needed. We will not rely on family or friends to provide translation support.
