Child Protection Case Conferences

Child Protection Case Conferences are convened by Family Social Services Worker to bring together all the relevant agencies involved with a family where a child or children is/are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm.  The conference will decide whether or not to make the child the subject of a Child protection plan.

CPCs consider all the children in a family even if there are only concerns about one child.

Where requested, services must respond promptly to invitations and staff must complete and return a multi-agency report pro forma for any invitation they receive.

CPCs consider all the children in a family even if there are only concerns about one child.

Purpose of Initial Child Protection Conferences:

  • To share and evaluate information in an inter-agency setting regarding the child(ren)'s health, development and functioning and the parent/carer's capacity to ensure to child's safety and promote their wellbeing

  • Make judgements about the likelihood of the child(ren) suffering or being likely to suffer future significant harm and whether there are sufficient concerns to make the child(ren) subject to a child protection plan or to remain subject to a child protection plan

  • Decide what future action is needed to safeguard the child(ren) and promote their welfare, how that action will be taken forward and with what intended outcomes and timescales. These decisions are captured in the child protection and core assessment plans.

  • Allocate a lead professional to develop, co-ordinate and implement the child protection plan.

  • Identify a multi-agency core group to develop and monitor the child protection plan.

Parents/carers may not always agree with the plan, but they are expected to follow it in child protection cases.
