Discretionary housing payment

The Discretionary Housing Payment Scheme (DHP) is a short term emergency fund for people who are in receipt of Housing Benefit (HB) or the housing costs element of Universal Credit (UC) and who have a shortfall between their HB or UC and their rent.

Everyone who is entitled to HB or the housing cost element of UC and who has a shortfall is entitled to make a claim for this help.

A DHP can also cover a rent deposit, benefit cap or if the person has a spare bedroom, rent in advance or removal expenses (if you have a valid reason to move).
