Extra support for participating

Extra support for participating

At Camden we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved, and we make every effort to support those who face additional barriers to involvement.

Some of the things we might to support a tenant to get involved include:

  • Shared agreements - Collaboratively created sets of guidelines for respectful communication. This could include things like active listening, avoiding judgment, respecting confidentiality, and using "I" statements.

  • Content warnings – We can provide content warnings before discussing potentially sensitive topics, such as violence, abuse, or trauma. This gives members a heads-up without necessarily "triggering" specific memories.

  • Icebreakers and Check-ins - We can use these activities to build rapport, encourage sharing, and create a sense of community. Check-ins can also be used to gauge emotional well-being before diving into potentially sensitive topics.

  • Option to Step Out -We always give members the option to step out of the discussion if needed.

  • Signposting onwards for supportIt might be that the resident needs more help, we can always signpost them onwards to others who can help. A full list of support services can be found on the Housing Hub.

  • Flexible scheduling - To better accommodate residents, we're flexible with the scheduling of groups and meetings. At the first gathering of any group, we'll discuss and agree upon the most suitable time, day, and frequency for everyone involved.

  • Travel arrangements - We can offer tenants support with arranging transportation, provide transportation, support getting to the venue, or reimburse travel costs, dependent on their need.

  • Support with childcare - If appropriate, children may be able to come to some activities. In some instances, we can also offer support with childcare costs.

  • Access to grants and funds - We have access to grants and funds in participation which we can signpost tenants to for support. Depending on the need, this could include the specialist projects grant, or DMC fund, or We Make Camden Kit. Please note, these grants cannot be used to support individual but could be used to support general accessibility to groups and activities.

  • Vouchers - Dependent on the engagement activity, we may use vouchers to reimburse residents for their time. This is in line with the London Living Wage.
