Housing DVA guidance

Home security

An essential component of tenancy sustainment is home security and there are a number of measures that we can take to improve the safety of a survivors home. Home safety measures should be offered if the survivor wants to remain in their property and into any property that they are successfully resettled into.

Emergency repairs
If the security of a home is compromised by damage or wear and tear e.g. older doors, locks not working or communal entry problems, refer to the repairs service for immediate action. They can also change locks on an emergency basis.

Locksmith scheme
Home security work can be referred to the Locksmith scheme. This is run by Camden’s Community Safety team. A trained Community Safety Officer will arrange to assess the property and specify suitable home security measures. This can include additional locks and strengthening of front entrances. This scheme is suitable for most risk levels and the work can be done quickly.

A referral form must be completed and sent to [email protected].

Safe Homes
This scheme is suitable for extremely high risk/high harm cases of domestic abuse. Under this scheme the police carry out a home security assessment and recommend works which are completed by Camden’s repairs team. This is a fully specified package of home security measures and always includes installing a sanctuary (panic) room and grilles on all accessible windows. The intention is to allow someone under extreme duress an extra 10 minutes to call the police for help.

The work is custom made and it can take up to 12 weeks before it’s fitted. The scheme may not always be suitable where immediate protection is required. Consult with Camden Safety Net, who can lead on referrals to this scheme.

WISH Plus
Home security and other improvements can also be referred to WISH Plus. The WISH Plus referral hub is a way for Camden residents to get access to a range of warmth, income, safety and health services (WISH).  You don’t need to know all the services available through WISH Plus to refer, just that the person you are referring might need some support to improve their health and wellbeing. WISH Plus puts people in touch with the services they need after discussing these with them first.  It is not the right service to contact in an emergency.

To make a referral to WISH you need the resident’s consent. Referrals can be made online at: www.camden.gov.uk/wish-plus
