Tools for Goal Setting

Tools for Goal Setting

Setting goals is an important part of Resilient Families, but sometimes goals can feel too big (like we'll never get there) or too small (doesn't feel like it made any difference) or not relevant (who does this goal matter to, you or me?).

So this part of the work is essential to create 'a ladder of goals' - what steps might we take together to take a step forward each time towards the future the child, parent and family want.

This tool will help you and the family to really think deeply about this together and make the goals SMARTER (see definition below)

G1 - Making Smarter Goals

Steps to Positive Goal Planning

  • Set a SMARTER Goal – think about what goals are important and realistic for the family
  • Identify Skills – what skills do the family already have?
  • Assess Strengths – how can you build on the family’s strengths?
  • Examine Stressors – think about what factors might get in the way of the family achieving their goals
  • Explore Strategies – how can you support the family to achieve their SMARTER goals?
  • Determine Support – what community resources / circles of support do the family have?
  • Track progress and celebrate successes – how can you acknowledge positive change?

SMARTER Means?

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Timed
  • Explicit
  • Reviewed (regularly)

Outcomes when families are empowered to set their own goals are:

  • Focused
  • Intended
  • Planned
