Family Early Help
What is a Biometric Residence Permit?
A biometric residence permit (BRP) is proof of the holder’s right to stay, work or study in the UK. It can also be used as a form of identification (for example, if they wish to open a bank account in the UK). Its an important task to do as soon as possible.
How do I help a Ukrainian family to get a BRP?
Ukrainian refugees will need to submit their biometrics to the Home Office within 6 months of arriving in the UK, and to extend their stay for up to 3 years. The Government have an online form to start this process. The form is here:
Ukraine Scheme BRP (visas-immigration.service.gov.uk)
Once the Home Office have received their details, they will contact the family to tell them how to provide your biometric information.
If families need help with this, they can call the government's free 24/7 helpline on 0808 164 8810.
The family may be asked to attend one of the Home Office Visa and Citizenship Application Centres s to submit their biometrics. Here is a link to finding the nearest visa centre to Camden UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (ukvcas.co.uk)

How do I help a family get a National Insurance Number?
A national insurance number is key to being able to work in the UK, so obtaining one should be a priority.
Getting a biometric permit also provides you with a national insurance number so families should not have to apply separately. Advise families of this when you do the initial welfare visit.
An alternative route is an universal credit application which should also include applying for a national insurance number.
If a family want to enquire about national insurance numbers separately, you can contact the National Insurance Number helpline here Apply for a National Insurance number - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
