UCH and Royal Free Childrens A&E Reopening April 2021

Last year, temporary changes were made to paediatric services in north central London (NCL). 

NCL NHS have now agreed it is safe to reopen the children and young people’s accident and emergency departments and general inpatient wards at University College Hospital from 9am on Thursday 8 April and at the Royal Free Hospital from 9am on Monday 12 April.

Until the University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital sites reopen, children and young people should continue to access emergency care through alternative hospitals. Options include the following:

If any parent is unsure where to take a child in need of emergency treatment they should visit 111.nhs.uk or call the NHS 111 service. In a life-threatening emergency, dial 999 immediately.

Royal Free

The children and young person’s emergency department at the Royal Free Hospital will be closed until further notice.

The closure will come into effect from 28 September. 2020. If your child needs emergency care, please take them to a hospital with a children and young people’s emergency department such as:

If you or your child needs urgent medical help or advice, and the situation is not life threatening, visit 111.nhs.uk or call NHS 111 to find out where your nearest service is located.

At the Royal Free Hospital children and young people’s in-patient services are also temporarily closing. Maternity and neonatal services at Barnet Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital are not affected by these changes

 

UCLH

The children and young people’s emergency department at UCLH is to temporarily be diverted to the Whittington Health NHS Trust from 8.00am Monday 30 March 2020. 

Anyone aged under 18 needing care for an accident or an emergency should go to the Whittington Hospital Emergency Department, Magdala Avenue, London, N19 5NF.

If people urgently need medical help or advice, but it is not a life-threatening situation, or if they don’t know who to ring, they should check NHS 111 online: https://111.nhs.uk/ 

In an emergency, Ambulance Services will automatically take patients to alternative hospitals during this period.

Additional Information About Clinics at UCLH and Royal Free

  • All paediatric inpatients from UCLH and RFH will move to Whittington Hospital.
  • Day cases will continue at RFH and GP availability will continue Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm as is the case now, predominantly over the phone.
  • Urgent clinics will continue at RFH.
  • All referrals will still go to RFH and will be reallocated from there.
