Direct Work Kit Bag

Direct Work Kit Bag

The Family Early Help Direct Work Kit Bag contains a wealth of ideas for sessions and visits with families, whether to understand their world, hear the voice of the child, or to help them move towards their goals.

All of the resources, tools and activities in the Direct Work Kit Bag can be used remotely or face to face.

Some might need to be ordered and sent to you, or sent direct to the family with their permission. If you would like to order any materials or activities, please let your line manager know.

The Kit Bag is a knowledge exchange, and many of the resources have been sent in by family workers. Why not share your favourite direct work idea? Send your example to Becca so it can go in the Kit Bag to share with others

Remember there are lots of other tools and worksheets in the Resilient Families pack to help every stage of your work with a family. You can find the pack here https://ascpractice.camden.gov.uk/early-help-guide/resilient-families-practice/

This section contains resources and ideas for reviews, checking-in calls with families and getting a sense of how things are going.

Sample Resilient Families Check-In Conversation Template

This helpful conversation template was sent to us by the Family Partnership Model trainers, and might be useful for weekly check-in conversations with families (or with staff if you are a supervisor) that are helpful and purposeful for them and for you.

Take What You Need Tokens

One of our favourite psychologists Karen Treisman designed these “take what you need” tokens. Cut them out & use as they are, or stick them on card, stones, buttons, badges, Lego, wooden shapes etc. A relational message, a thinking of you token, a transitional object, or a way for children and parents to share what they need from with each other (and from you!). Please share & use but cite Karen!

Personalised Office 365 Forms to Send to a Family

A lovely example from Megan in FIF using an Office 365 form which she designed to support a young person. You can design and share an Office 365 form using the Forms app.

For example, if you have a child or parent who is not keen talking over the phone, you could send an Office 365 form ahead of your weekly virtual visit, so they can tell you in advance how they're feeling about specific things (in Megan's example it was returning to school).

Heres a screen shot of where to find the Forms app in your browser:

Postcards

Sent through the post, the postcard can act as a physical way of maintaining connection, developing a relationship and increasing mentalising. We can order postcards for you and send them to your home for you to send onto children if you would like to.

Blob Swimming Pool

Here's way to use imagery and visuals to check-in with a child or parent to ask how they're doing today - show the image on a phone or email/post, and ask them to think about which blob they would choose to represent how they're doing right now (or draw their own blob to show you). Supports curiosity and reflection. Download image here or right click the image to save it.

Blob Journey

A tool to use to check-in with how a child or parent thinks their journey towards their goals is going (can be used regularly to support reflection on progress). Ask the child or parent to say which blob they would pick to describe where they feel they are on their journey, and explore their answer. They can also draw their own blob on the picture. Download or right click to save the image, can be sent via message/email/post or show on a screen

Blob Transition

Similar to Blob Journey and used the same way

Resilient Families Reviewing Partnership Cards

These are also shown earlier as part of the contracting we do during assessment but can be a helpful way to make sure the family are finding our help helpful during a review or check-in. Right-click to save the image, or you can find them in the Resilient Families section of the Guidebook here https://ascpractice.camden.gov.uk/early-help-guide/resilient-families-practice/resilient-families-pack/
