Parenting Support and Parenting Programmes

This section contains information about parenting programmes and parenting support available in Camden. There are three tabs, one for 'general' parenting programmes, one for 'specific' parenting programmes that support parents with a specific topic or theme, and one for parent support groups. 

Family Harmony Parenting Programme (Creative Therapies)

This weekly creative therapy family group programme from Coram is for parents looking to improve communication and strengthen relationships with their child/ren.

The programme uses music, art, and other creative methods as a basis, and is for parents and caregivers with children of any age, including parents of children who have additional needs and disabilities. It is delivered in-person at the Pears Pavilion on the Coram Campus near Russell Square.

The programme aims to: 

  • help parents recognise and build on the strengths that already exist within their family
  • Learn creative ways to resolve differences to prevent them from becoming more
    frequent or intense
  • learn better ways to understand and respond to each other
  • Provide opportunities to come together to create music and art as a way to connect with their child and family

Parent to Parent - The Winch

The Winch run this weekly course focussing on parents supporting each other around communicating with your child. More details below.

 

Incredible Years (5-11 year olds)

Incredible Years is run on a group basis by North Camden CAMHS, and on a 121 basis by Families in Focus. Incredible Years aims to promote children’s pro-social behaviour, whilst supporting parents to develop strategies to help reduce their child’s challenging behaviour.

Incredible Year is for parents with children of primary school age and focuses on five key component areas:

  • Play
  • Praise and Rewards
  • Effective Limit Setting
  • Handling misbehaviour (including conduct disorders e.g. ADHD)
  • Increase child’s self-esteem and confidence

The programme is structured into 12 sessions of two and a half hours each

The group is well suited to: 

  • Where there are mild to moderate concerns regarding their child’s behaviour; for example, not following instructions, oppositional behaviour,  difficulties with emotional regulation and difficulties with routines etc.
  • Parents who would benefit from meeting other parents who are experiencing similar challenges with their children’s behaviour

Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities (4-17 years)

Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities (SFSC) is run in Camden by Families in Focus, Somali Youth Development Resource Centre in Kings Cross and Castlehaven in Camden Town. 

 This programme is for parents with children between the ages of 4 – 17 years and aims to cover:

  • improving parent child relationship
  • Managing challenging behaviour
  • Conflict management, problem solving and solution building
  • Decision making, healthy choices and negotiating skills
  • How to use Family and Community resources

It is a 13 week programme which takes place in Camden and is open to all parents of children who reside in borough.  For more information or to refer a parent, contact:

Triple P (4-12 Years) 

This programme is for parents with children aged 4-12 years of age and covers a range of topics including: 

  • Explore positive parenting
  • Cope with the difficulties and emotional stress of COVID 19
  • Encourage good behaviour
  • Prevent tantrums and manage misbehaviour
  • Take the stress out of shopping
  • Manage problems calmly and without yelling
  • Get your child to cooperate and follow instructions
  • Strengthening your relationship as you teach them new skills

There are 8 modules to complete for the online version. FiF will be offering 10 sessions of coaching support to parents alongside this programme.  One session will be undertaken prior to the programme commencing and the remaining sessions throughout the course of the programme.

 

Teen Triple P (13-17 years)

This programme is for parents with teenage children (aged 13-17 years) and aims to help parents:

  • Communicate better
  • Build a stronger relationship
  • Agree on rules
  • Deal calmly with conflict
  • Navigate emotional ups and downs
  • Equip your teen to handle life’s challenges

There are 6 modules to complete for the online version. FiF will be offering 8 sessions of coaching support to parents alongside this programme.  One session will be undertaken prior to the programme commencing and the remaining sessions throughout the course of the programme.
