NHS Low Income Scheme to Reduce Costs for Families

Families on low income can get help to reduce the costs of some NHS services, including:

You're entitled to free prescriptions, dental costs and eyecare costs if you or your partner – including civil partner – receive, or you're under the age of 20 and the dependent of someone receiving:

  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Universal Credit and meet the criteria

If you're entitled to or named on:

  • a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate – if you do not have a certificate, you can show your award notice; you qualify if you get Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits with a disability element (or both), and have an income for tax credit purposes of £15,276 or less
  • a valid HC2 certificate

People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.

You can use this eligibility checker to find out if a family can get help with NHS costs https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/check-for-help-paying-nhs-costs/start

Even if a family is not in receipt of one of these benefits but is on a low income, they may still be able to get help with the cost of these NHS services through the NHS Low Income Scheme. You can find out more about the NHS Low Income Scheme here

Mobile Health Bus

The Camden Mobile Health bus offers free NHS health checks, health information and advice for people aged 35+. Walk-in service, no appointment needed. The NHS Health Check is 100% voluntary and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. The doctor or nurse working on the bus will record your age, height and weight, and will also check your blood pressure. You may then be asked questions about your family history and lifestyle.

If you're working with a parent who might value having an NHS healthcheck, you can find this weeks route for the Health Bus here
