Information on the Sensory Needs Team, making reasonable adjustments and the Big Word

Sensory Needs

It is important to support residents to be able to access services within their community and this may require making reasonable adjustments.  The Sensory Needs team are able to provide support to any residents (children, adults and families) who are blind or partially sighted; D/deaf or hard of hearing or both significant hearing and sight loss.

Please refer to the Council website for further information on the Sensory Needs team.

The Sensory Needs Service can support people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and have difficulty staying safe and socially independent at home. Someone's hearing loss must be permanent in order to be supported by the service.

If someone is eligible, they may be given equipment free of charge to help them live as independently as possible.

The type of equipment depends on individual circumstances but may include:

  • a vibrating pad which is linked to a smoke alarm
  • a baby alarm or wrist receiver that has been specially adapted to alert deaf parents of their baby crying
  • a flashing light for a doorbell and/or telephone
  • an amplified telephone
  • Headset or neck-worn T- loop for connection to a TV or a one-to-one meeting
  • a textphone

Further information can be found on the Sensory Needs Service page.
