Direct Payments

Quick guidance on direct payments and support services for individuals in receipt of direct payments

Direct Payments

"I can decide the kind of support I need and when, where and how to receive it"

The London Borough of Camden (LBC) is committed to ensuring that the option of a Direct Payment is explored with, and understood by, everyone who is eligible to receive one.  They will be given information about Direct Payments at the point of assessment and review, and will have access to appropriate information, support and advice, in an accessible format, throughout the whole process.

To see the current Direct Payment guidance please visit Camden Care Choices.

For feedback on commissioned providers for direct payments users please see the 'Reporting Safeguarding and Quality Concerns' page.

Direct Payments are to be used to pay for support that meets the outcomes agreed in the support plan, examples of what the direct payment can be used for include:

  • employing a personal assistant to provide support with household tasks or personal care
  • buying services from a private care provider
  • accessing social or educational activities in the
local community by paying towards support or transport costs
  • respite care to provide a break for unpaid carers providing a substantial amount of support to a person with disabilities or an older person

Direct payments cannot be used for:

  • anything that is illegal
  • pay household bills or other personal expenses
  • anything that should be provided by the NHS or CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) (such as pressure relieving mattresses) as the NHS offers health personal budgets for such support needs
  • long term residential care
  • to employ family members living at the same address.
