Financial Support

Changes in the economy have had an impact on people's finances. There is support for residents in severe financial hardship and who can't afford necessities to live. Support could be through internal schemes or referrals to external support including grants.

Debt advice

Age UK Camden

The Age UK Camden Information & Advice service offer advice on:

  • Welfare and benefits.
  • Debt and money.
  • Housing.
  • Accessing services.
  • Charitable grants.
  • Supporting people with arranging Lasting Power of Attorney and later life planning.

This service is available for Camden residents aged 55+. It is also available for the carers of a Camden resident, when the information and advice is relevant to their role as a carer.

Citizens Advice Camden 

Citizens Advice Camden delivers local projects and services alongside Voluntary and Community Sector partners, as well as a national debt advice help line. 

When Camden resident's connect with the national helpline, they can request to be put in touch with local support services.

Mary Ward Legal Centre Debt Advice 

On a referral basis, Mary Ward Legal Centre offer debt advice on all personal debt issues including:

  • Rent and mortgage arrears.
  • Council tax arrears.
  • Benefits overpayments.
  • Credit debts.
  • Bankruptcy and Debt Relief Orders.
  • Unpaid gas/electricity bills.

The service will support people with any size of debt/s, on any income, who are resident in any London borough.

The Sherriff Centre

Registered charity The Sherriff Centre offer a free debt advice service regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. They are also members of Advice UK.

The service can help with a wide range of debt issues including:

  • Utility debt.
  • Rent and council tax arrears.
  • Credit debts.
  • Overpayment of benefits.
  • Tax credits.
  • Emergencies such as repossession, eviction or disconnection.

To access the service, resident's must present with a minimum of a single debt - there needn’t be any immediate threat from the creditor. 

Whilst accepting self-referrals, The Sherriff Centre recommend that council staff phone while face-to-face with a resident who has an emergency (particularly court dates).
