Debt Management: Breathing Space

Debt Management: Breathing Space

Breathing space is a Debt Respite Scheme, that aims to help individuals by offering financial help from a debt advisor. The scheme give people in a mental health crisis support with the right to legal protections from their creditors.

Further information can be found in the Treasury for Mental Health Crisis Breathing Space guidance.

It is expected that all people being referred will be under the care of a local mental service, an inpatient in hospital or in one of the Crisis Homes. To make a referral someone from the team of care looking after them should do it on their behalf.

The patient will need to sign a consent form and make a document of Best Interests to share information with AMHP. Once a referral has been made to an AMHP a note should be made on Carenotes with the date of the referral.

Please note there is a seven-day process for Breathing to either accept or deny applications for this scheme.

You will need to complete an Evidence of Mental Health Crisis Treatment form in order for the person to show evidence of their mental illness/ mental state. Only then can you send a Referral Form to make an application to Breathing space.
