Debt Management: Breathing Space

Breathing space is a Debt Respite Scheme, that aims to help individuals by offering financial help from a debt advisor. The scheme give people in a mental health crisis support with the right to legal protections from their creditors.

To be accepted by the Mental Health Crisis Breathing Scheme you must be:

  • A UK resident receiving mental health crisis treatment (including if that treatment has already started).
  • Receiving any other crisis, emergency care or treatment in hospital or in the community from a specialist mental health service.
  • They offer help to anyone with different mental disorders of a serious nature. This includes services from crisis teams, liaison mental health teams and crisis houses.

People who are not entitled to MHCBS:

  • People who have not started their mental health crisis treatment or have ended their treatment.
  • If AMHP (Approved Mental Health Professional) cannot lawfully complete an evidence form for them they will not be excepted but may be able to receive help from the standard Breathing Space scheme.
