Quick guidance on key safes for social care practitioners

Key Safes

A key safe is a strong mechanical metal box that securely stores a spare key inside for use by an authorised visitor to enter an individual's home. Key safes are provided only for care workers and community nurses to access an individual's property, when it is evidenced that it has become problematic for the individual to answer the door.

The ordering of a Key Safe is via TCES (Transforming Community Equipment Service) by Operational Managers, who have access to the TCES system.

Medequip are the preferred provider. They manage the installation of the key safes and provide the necessary training to individuals, carers and professionals, as required.

Consideration will be needed as to who would need access to the code i.e. individual, community nurse, home care worker, family member, care manager, warden etc. (minimum number possible for security). The Medequip technician will set the code during installation but they do not store the code. The code can be input on Mosaic in case it is forgotten – a number of security questions will be asked before the code is given out; date of birth, address etc.
