Quick guidance on key safes for social care practitioners

Key Safes

A key safe is a strong mechanical metal box that securely stores a spare key inside for use by an authorised visitor to enter an individual's home. Key safes can be provided for anyone requiring access to an individual's property, when it is evidenced that it has become problematic for the individual to answer the door.

Ordering a key safe

Depending on the type of property, key safes can be ordered in different ways.

  • If it is a Camden Council property, Housing Repairs will install the key safe. Email: [email protected]
  • If it is a Housing Association property, practitioners need to email the relevant Housing Association.
  • If the property is privately rented or the person is an owner occupier, we are currently continuing to use Careline to oversee these key safe installations, during the transition period to our new community equipment provider.

Please note that due to limited capacity, Careline can only process urgent requests for key safes (e.g. to facilitate hospital discharge or to enable a carer to access a property to provide support).
To send a referral to Careline for the installation of a key safe, please complete the Key Safe Referral Form and email it to [email protected].
Please note, if you choose to upload this referral form onto Mosaic to reflect the referral made, the code needs to be removed from the document beforehand. Keeping any key safe codes in documents, workflows or in insecure case notes on Mosaic, is a data breach.

It is the prescriber’s responsibility to coordinate who is the person responsible for setting the key safe code. The code should be recorded on Mosaic in the secure way– a number of security questions will be asked before the code is given out; date of birth, address etc.  Consideration will be needed as to who would need access to the code i.e. individual, community nurse, home care worker, family member, care manager, warden etc. (minimum number possible for security).
