Quick guidance on key safes for social care practitioners

Key Safes

A key safe is a strong mechanical metal box that securely stores a spare key inside for use by an authorised visitor to enter an individual's home. Key safes are provided only for care workers and community nurses to access an individual's property, when it is evidenced that it has become problematic for the individual to answer the door.

Individuals should always be advised that the addition of a key safe MAY render their home and contents insurance invalid. If the key safe provides access to communal areas in the property this may result in ALL residences being at risk of their insurance being deemed invalid.

Please check tenure of property before making a recommendation. If the individual lives in private rented, leasehold or housing association property, the permission must be gained from the landlord/leaseholder.  This does not apply to individuals living in council properties.

The key safe should be fixed to an external brick wall. Key safes should only be fitted to communal doors in exceptional circumstances. Consideration should be given to the risk this causes to the other tenants.

The Medequip technicians are responsible for assessing and advising on the most suitable location for the safe to be fitted.

  • Care workers should be encouraged to knock the individual’s door before entering the property and announce their arrival. They should ensure that keys have been put back safely and the key safe should not be left open even if it is empty
