Quick guidance on key safes for social care practitioners

Key Safes

A key safe is a strong mechanical metal box that securely stores a spare key inside for use by an authorised visitor to enter an individual's home. Key safes can be provided for anyone requiring access to an individual's property, when it is evidenced that it has become problematic for the individual to answer the door.

Key safe codes (practitioner's responsibility)

If such an event should occur where you need to arrange the installation of a keysafe and provide a third party with access you can:

1) Create the keysafe code yourself and record this on Mosaic. Further guidance on recording key codes on Mosaic can be found here. Practitioners who do not have access to Mosaic should record this keycode on the Careline referral form and request that Careline add this to Mosaic on their behalf. The Careline technician will then install the keysafe and use the code you have provided to set the combination.

2) The number you create needs to be a minimum of four digits, it is recommended between 5-7 characters including one letter should be used with no duplications, no two digits the same, for example the code ‘1066’ would NOT be acceptable.

3) You should avoid using any combination of numbers relating to your client, such as their date of birth, or sequential numbers for instance 1234.
