Adult Family Group Conferences - a strengths based approach

Family Group Conferencing

‘Enabling self-support and self-determination’

Are you working with an adult facing difficult issues? Can you see strengths in an adult’s network that are not being utilised? Is a carer struggling to cope? Why not consider a Family Group Conference.

Further details on adult family group conferences can be found here

The FGC Coordinator organizes the meeting in conjunction with the adult or person acting in their Best Interest, identifying who is in the network for the adult. This can include close friends and neighbours.

  • The FGC Coordinator discusses with the adult how they can be helped to participate in the conference and whether they would like a supporter or advocate at the meeting . The supporter/advocate will then meet with the adult in preparation for the meeting.
  • The FGC Coordinator meets with members of the network, discusses worries or concerns, including how the Family Group Conference will be conducted, and encourages them to attend.
  • The FGC Coordinator liaises with the referrer and other relevant agencies to ensure the adult and the chosen network have appropriate information about:

- the welfare and/or protection concerns which need to be considered at the Family Group Conference. This includes identifying any bottom line about what can, and, importantly, cannot be agreed as part of the FGC Plan for the adult from the agency’s perspective.

- services that could support the adult.

  • The FGC Coordinator negotiates the date, time, and venue for the conference, sends out invitations and makes the necessary practical arrangements
