Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse is defined as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence, within the context of an intimate relationship. Violence and abuse can also be instigated by other family members.

Recognising domestic abuse, assessing risk and taking action to protect children and victims is a key social work task.

The CSFH Domestic Abuse policy provides information on domestic abuse and sets out the procedures to be followed on cases where domestic abuse is a presenting issue.

The CSCP multi-agency guidance on domestic abuse provides details of how social workers should work jointly with other agencies where domestic abuse is a presenting issue.
