CLA and youth justice

Some young people who are looked after may enter the criminal justice system and some may become looked after having been remanded into local authority accommodation. It is Camden's policy that these looked after young people are not disadvantaged by their care status whilst on remand or in custody. This requires close joint working between CSSW and the Youth Justice Service.

Looked after children are more likely than their peers to enter the criminal justice system due to their looked after status.

It is Camden’s policy that wherever possible, CLA are not criminalised unnecessarily, and that restorative justice approaches are used to deal with incidents occurring in placement where this is more appropriate.

The Reducing the criminalisation of LAC protocol has been developed for use by all staff, foster carers, residential workers and key workers in pathways accommodation to help them decide on the best approach to take in response to incidents with a view to avoiding criminalising young people.
