CLA and youth justice

Some young people who are looked after may enter the criminal justice system and some may become looked after having been remanded into local authority accommodation. It is Camden's policy that these looked after young people are not disadvantaged by their care status whilst on remand or in custody. This requires close joint working between CSSW and the Youth Justice Service.

Some young people become looked after because they have been remanded into care by the courts.

These young people will only be looked after for as long as they are on remand, and are likely to leave the care system quickly once their case has been disposed of by the courts.

Because they are likely to be looked after for a short time prior to their remand ending, not all care planning processes will apply.

The Remands into local authority accommodation and youth detention policy and the Remands into local authority care procedures sets out the procedural steps when dealing with these cases as well as guidance on working with the young person to ensure their welfare is safeguarded whilst on remand.
