Service description and delivery
All children with a disability are children in need under section 17 of Children Act 1989.
Children and young people will be eligible for a service from the CYPDS where they have a substantial and long term disability that impairs their ability to do normal daily activities.
Eligibility for a service is based on the level of functional needs the child has and this is established via a Functional Needs Assessment which is carried out by health practitioners who have been working with the child in the previous year, for example paediatricians, occupational health, speech therapists.
To meet the criteria for a service from CYPDS, the child must score at least 2 moderate or 1 severe or profound needs which have been identified by the relevant professional.
Further details are available in sections 1.4- 1.6 of the CYPDS policy and procedures.
