Safeguarding and deprivation of liberty

Safeguarding and deprivation of liberty

The CYPDS recognises the heightened vulnerability of children and young people with disabilities to abuse, neglect and exploitation and will follow the processes set out here to keep them safe whilst enabling them to take up opportunities for education and leisure.

Children with disabilities are more vulnerable to neglect and abuse than their peers.

Various factors contribute to their vulnerability and a number of barriers that can prevent them from seeking help.

Social workers need to be aware of the specific safeguarding issues faced by children with disabilities in order to ensure they have the same level of protection as their peers. The specific vulnerabilities and barriers are explored in the CSCP guidance on safeguarding children with disabilities.

Where the CYPDS has concerns that a child with disabilities may be at risk of significant harm, child protection procedures will be followed.

Where there are concerns that a child or young person known to the CYPDS is being exploited, social workers will follow CSSW child exploitation procedures.
