Visits and engagement with families

Child protection cases require a high level of monitoring and oversight in order to manage and reduce risk. It is therefore essential that social workers see the child regularly and are able to engage families in working to implement the child protection plan.

Non-engagement is a serious issue in child protection cases and can raise questions about the safety of the child.

The Working with non-engaging, resistant and hostile families policy provides guidance on why families may disengage, so that by understanding these social workers can develop strategies to improve engagement.

In CP cases, social workers need to take immediate and appropriate action where families disengage as this may increase the perceived level of risk to the child, so it is important that robust action is taken immediately.
