CP procedures

Child protection (CP) involves the statutory intervention into a child‘s life because there is reason to believe they are suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm. This is defined as harm arising from ill treatment or impairment of health and development due to neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse or emotional abuse, and includes impairment suffered as a consequence of seeing or hearing the ill treatment of another.

Child protection processes are set out in the statutory guidance Working together to safeguard children

The core group is a group of professionals who, together with parents, are responsible for developing and implementing the CP plan.

Social workers are responsible for convening, chairing and recording core group meetings. The purpose of the meeting is to ensure the plan is being implemented and to feed back on progress to the professional network at the following review.

The London safeguarding children procedures sets out the requirements for core groups and the implementation of CP plans.

The date of the first meeting will be set at the initial case conference and further dates should be arranged at each subsequent meeting.

Social workers should refer to the Core group practice guidance for further information.
