Child protection

Child protection (CP) involves the statutory intervention into a child‘s life because there is reason to believe they are suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm. This is defined as harm arising from ill treatment or impairment of health and development due to neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse or emotional abuse, and includes impairment suffered as a consequence of seeing or hearing the ill treatment of another.

A CP plan will be in place for any child whom conference believes to be at risk of significant harm.

The core group is a group of professionals who, together with parents, are responsible for developing and implementing the CP plan. The core group will be chosen at the initial CP conference and will meet within 10 working days of the conference and then every 6 weeks. Social workers are responsible for convening and managing core group meetings and details of this are available in the Core group practice guidance.

CP plans are normally discharged at a CP conference when the child is considered no longer at risk, but the plan may be discharged without holding a conference where the child becomes looked after, the child dies or the child goes to live abroad. For details on how to discharge plans in these circumstances please see the Discharge of CP plans policy.
