Vulnerable children

Some children are more vulnerable to harm, abuse, exploitation or poor outcomes because of their circumstances or because of their personal attributes.

Camden has a duty to ensure children in the borough are receiving a suitable education and that their welfare is safeguarded and promoted at all times. This includes children who are being educated at home.

There are a number of reasons for parents choosing to home educate, for example because of concerns the school cannot meet their child’s needs, and it is within their right to do so. However, where a child is known to CSFH and there are safeguarding concerns, it is essential social workers are aware of the Safeguarding home educated children policy so that the child’s welfare and safety can continue to be monitored even when out of school.

Social workers should ensure parents they work with who are (or considering) elective home education have a copy of the Camden Parents guide to elective home education that provides details of how to access advice and support from Camden’s Elective Home Education team.
