Unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC)
UASC must be under 18 when they present and there may be times when it is difficult to establish a child's age or they appear to be older.
As some UASC may arrive with no documentation or false documents, it may be difficult to know their true age, but if it is believed that they are under 18 the should be treated as UASC and become looked after.
Where the young person’s age is disputed by the Home Office, or Camden has reasonable grounds to believe they are older that 18, an age assessment can be completed to establish their actual age.
Age assessments should be carried out using the ADCS age assessment guidance in order to be compliant with case law.
This guide to age assessments written by young asylum seekers provides useful information for young people who are about to undergo an age assessment.
