Permanence and adoption

Permanence and adoption

All children need to grow up in a stable family environment that meets their developmental needs and assures their safety and security throughout their childhood in order to give them a sense of permanence.

For most children permanence will be achieved within their birth family. However, for some this may not be possible or in their best interests and social workers will need to consider an alternative family home that can offer security and stability.

The Permanence planning policy and the Permanence practice guidance set out how permanence will be achieved for all children known to CSFH, and includes information on permanence planning and a range of permanence options.

To ensure decisions on permanence are taken as early as possible and to avoid drift and delay, social workers should follow the Early permanence policy.  Camden has an Early Permanence Strategy providing a framework of practice that allows social workers to explore a variety of permanence options simultaneously from the earliest opportunity.
